There are more than 4, 800 lifeboat crew members around the UK and Ireland, who drop everything and head to their lifeboat station when their pagers go off, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Nearly all of them are volunteers who live or work near the lifeboat station. Only one in ten crew members have a professional maritime occupation. The RNLI gives the men and women the training needed to make them into lifesavers.
The 20 plus lifeboat crew at North Berwick are all volunteers and are a mix of students, builders, police officers and much more. When their pagers go off they run, cycle or drive down to the station and get onto the water in less than five minutes.
Helping the lifeboat crew launch are volunteers who drive the tractor, fill in the reports, and fundraise to enable the lifeboat to go to sea. We also have a press officer and sea safety officer at North Berwick.
